This was the first time we had to replace the lever in over 10 years, so I decided to pay extra for the TOTO brand part, which I looked up on their web site. All I had to do to make it work was bend the lever down a bit to ensure some slack in the chain on the flapper valve. Highly recommended.

Apparently the same thing that happened to me has happened to many others: the top of the metal piece that restrains the motion of the rod broke after 15 years of faithful service. The new one fits perfectly, took 60 seconds to install, and the piece that failed on the original is now significantly reinforced. Looks great and works like the day we bought the unit 15 years ago. A+

If you're wondering whether you should buy the TOTO part or the generic for 1/3 of the price, BUY THE TOTO!!! I've bought generic parts over the years, and always end up ordering the genuine TOTO part after the generic doesn't quite work 100% and it drives me up a wall. There's no comparison between a TOTO toilet running on genuine parts and a TOTO toilet running on cheaper parts. Remember when your TOTO was new and it was amazing? That's what you won't have anymore if you order the generic replacements.

It took me 3 trips to the 2 big box stores to find a replacement and none of them would work although they stated on packaging that should work for side mount toilet with a little modification (bending the bar). 3 hours later, still, none of them worked properly, one even broke on 2nd flush. Lol. After searching online, got this one on DecorativePlumbingOnline.com. I think this tank lever is working for all Toto 8 series (FYI, serial numbers is underneath tank cover). Mine didn't have exact numbers as DecorativePlumbingOnline.com package, but it started with number 8, besides, it looks identical in picture. This is a genuine replacement part of TOTO and it Made in USA. Looks and feels solid and durable. It took me a total of 1 MINUTE to replace it. Believe it or not? Although it price is double compared to those off brands, but, IT WORKS, saves you time, hassles and I'm sure it will last much longer compared to the quality of others.

To those complaining about the poor design, the replacement handle I received has obviously been redesigned from the original to address this issue. My original handle failed in the same way others have mentioned - brass arm broke through the top of the slot it slides in. On this new handle, the top of that slot is about 3x thicker than the old one, and has an extra angled piece cast into it to reinforce that area of the part. I am confident this new one will not fail in the same way as the original.
